Weekly Update 2/24/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

Another fine week for the team. Lots of great finishes at various running events. Our runners really represented this week. Cycling is slowly making a return as days get a little longer and temps are becoming more agreeable. With Mid-South Gravel coming up soon, many have been out training for some long gravel races.

Kimi Shank Reed is headed for Olympic Marathon Trials. SBC is hosting a watch party. Details below in "This Week".

Trivia Night Fairbanks Fundraiser was a great success. Twelve tables of ten contestants. The Holland Brothers did an excellent job. The event raised $3000 for The Fairbanks Bike shop.

Weekly Update 2/17/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

This week the newsletter is a little late. I apologize for that. Especially since it's a reward week thanks to Nicole Fleming and her overall win at The Outlaw 135. She was the only female to finish. Nice job Nicole. If you didn't before, now you know why she was a panelist last week at the "How We Did Epic" lecture.

Also, last week I committed a rather glaring omission. I'm sure many of you saw it on Instagram and/or Facebook, but Danielle Dingman got 2nd place Female Pro at IM70.3 Dubai with a blistering 4:05 finishing time. Great start to the season Danielle!

Kimi Shank Reed is 2 weeks out from Olympic Marathon Trials. Wish her luck if you see her.

Trivia Night Fairbanks Fundraiser is this week. Volunteers are set, buffet in the works. We need participants and prizes. If you know someone or work for a business who would like to donate a prize, contact Neil . Be there; Trivia Night

Lengthy, but important;

Please find info on the opportunity for public input on the future recreation program on Mark Twain National Forest below:
ROLLA, Mo. (Feb. 4, 2020) “Every five years, the public has the opportunity to share their thoughts about the strategic future of the recreation program on Mark Twain National Forest (MTNF); and right now is one of those opportunities. A process called Recreation Site Analysis (RSA) has begun, and MTNF will be accepting public comments through March 6, 2020. Public comments will provide insight to help recreation staff understand the trends in use.  Specifically, MTNF is looking for comments regarding developed recreation sites, such as campgrounds, boat landings, and picnic areas. Cory Roegner, Forest Recreation Officer, stated, We want our visitors to enjoy the Forest, and recreation activities need developed recreation sites to support them; so we are going to do our best to balance budgets and demands while being future-focused through this process.  Many of the recreation sites on MTNF are starting to show signs of disrepair, and the costs to operate and maintain these sites has increased over time to a level that is unsustainable.  Given current and projected financial and staffing constraints, some difficult decisions are expected to be necessary for MTNF to provide quality and sustainable recreation opportunities for the long-run; and that is why we want to engage early with those that love to visit the forest.  The comments received will be combined with the Forests internal analysis and used to develop a draft proposal for a sustainable recreation program. A draft proposal is expected to be released in May 2020, which will also be open to public comment.  Comments could include but are not limited to, such things as:
  • What are your favorite recreation sites on MTNF and why?
  • What would you like to see more (or less) of at a specific developed recreation site on MTNF?
  • Are there amenities lacking at any MTNF recreation site?  If so, what site and what do you want to see there? Are there any sites you think should be closed or have services reduced to shift funding to another site?
  • Are there trends in recreation you are seeing that MTNF should consider during this process?
To submit your comments please email them to SM.FS.MTNF_Rec@usda.gov

Weekly Update 2/3/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

Unless you live under a rock, you may have noticed a lot of red and gold around town this week and especially this past Sunday. You also may have noticed that local favorite NFL team Kansas City Chiefs ended their Super Bowl drought with a come from behind win.

Many gathered Saturday morning to move the Fairbanks Bike Shop into the new space. Some light construction was done. The new spot has a lot of potential, and the team is looking forward to being able to get to work without having to clear the rolling stock out of the way to create working space.

Next up in The Winter Lecture series is "How We Did Epic"- an excellent panel of local folks who challenged themselves to do something epic. Details here- How We Did Epic
