Weekly Update 02/26/20219

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

Folks,

There was a lot going on this past week, and over the weekend. Races, fundraisers, and group activities, but the biggest occurrence is a sad one to report. Teammate and cyclist Paul Hardin lost his life Saturday at a gravel event in Arkansas. No one saw the accident but it appears Paul missed a downhill corner and hit a tree. The coroner does not believe there was any suffering. Paul was all you could ask for in a teammate and a friend. He was selfless, encouraging, and enthusiastic. He was always present and helpful, on rides, at the  Fairbanks bike shop and in life. Those who knew him will draw from his well for years to come. He leaves a huge gap in the SBC peleton. We'll be doing a group ride and fun run for Paul on March 9th- Memorial Ride/Run FB Event page.

In light of recent events and since Paul was the hub for Cycling Camp this coming weekend, it has been decided to cancel that event.

On a more upbeat note; Kimi Reed finished fifth overall female at the Austin Half Marathon. Remarkable accomplishment in a field of 16,000 runners between half and full marathons. Sarah Waterman banged out a Boston qualifying marathon in Fort Worth TX. Rosie Laughlin won the Masters Female and Pam Sailors got 2nd in her division at the Cabin Fever Reliever. The Trivia Night fundraiser was well attended with 16 tables of 8. The event raised over $3000. Photos from the event are here; Trivia Night .

If anyone knows any local businesses that might want to donate a door prize or raffle prize or maybe even an auction item for the Trivia Night Fundraiser on Sat Feb 23 – please secure the donation and get it to Neil  He can also arrange for a runner to pick it up if necessary.  Many thanks. (Tax deductible.)

Also – probably need a couple of volunteers for the night to collect entry fees, sell raffle tickets, etc, etc.  Please email Neil and Jon Brusherd to identify your willingness (yes – the hours would count towards Active membership pledge).

Reminder

For the purposes of the rewards program, “Active” SBC Athletics team members are defined as:
a.     Folks training (and racing, if you race) in a positive manner in SBC gear;
b.     Folks routinely sharing/posting positive team/community-centric posts on social media that feature the SBC logo and the SBC Athletics tag “@sbc_athletics”, with at least one of our hashtags: #fortheloveofsport and/or some variation of  #wemakeworldclassbeerandciderforaftertoo (this only applies if you are on social media);
c.     Folks sharing said pics with our social media team AJ Hemmingway and Michelle Rador, via FB messenger, for their use on team social media sites;
d.     Folks sharing results/achievements/epic-fails, etc with Cynthia Bradley (cynch64@gmail.com)  and John H Long (longjohnh@swbell.net) for the weekly team newsletter by 5 pm each Sunday. (This is also key for the rewards program below); and
e.     Folks who have either signed up for 4 bike shop shifts, or otherwise pledged to donate 12 hours of volunteering time at local athletic events in 2019 (with the SBC logo showing somewhere).  (For example, one all day volunteer alternative to the bike shop will be the Tour De Brew on June 1, where there will be 2 rides +  2 runs/walks that will need managing/leadout/support, etc.  But this is for sure intended to be a community wide program, and is meant to include volunteering at all other local athletic events like Girls On The Run, helping at a charity ride, the Bass Pro fitness series, SBC Ultramax trail run, etc, etc, etc – pretty much the goal is for you to be involved helping put on athletic event(s) in the SWMO community as representatives of SBC Athletics.  (Questions: email neilchanter@stronglaw.com.)
“Active” team members will need to collect their 2019 SBC Athletics membership card from Neil at Strong Garner Bauer, 415 E. Chestnut Exp, 65802.  Your card will have your name and club number on it, so it can be registered at/with SBC for the team rewards program.  Email neilchanter@stronglaw.com for pickup arrangements.  We can also mail your card out to you too, if easier for you(Again, figure this out with Neil.)  Cards will only be issued to Active SBC Athletics members.  (See above for definition of Active.)
As you may know, we lost Bass Pro, Andy’s, + Nature’s Wonder as sponsors for various reasons (none having to do with the team) this year.  Regardless, the 2019 SBC Athletics rewards/incentive program for “Active” SBC Athletics team members will be as follows:
  1. Racers: If you race 20 runs, race 10 bike races (road, gravel, mountain or cross), or if triathletes race 10 Sprint to Olympic distance, 5 half IM, or 2 IM triathlons in 2019 for SBC in SBC gear: you get a case of beer at SBC.  (If you don’t drink beer – figure out an alternative with neilchanter@stronglaw.com.)
  2. Overall race win: free entrée or appetizer at SBC, up to $12 in value, for the athlete (up to a maximum of 5 per athlete in any given year – i.e.  Cynthia Bradley gets a maximum of 5 free meals a year, even if she wins 8 races).
    1. When an SBC Athlete wins, every Active SBC Athlete wins: every Active SBC Athlete gets a free draft beer or draft cider at SBC.  (This will still apply even if the winning athlete has exhausted their personal tally above in #B).
  3. Something totally epic – like your first 100 mile run, your first 600k ride, etc: a free entrée or appetizer up to $12 in value for the athlete. (If you’re wanting to qualify for this, submit your target event/goal/achievement to neilchanter@stronglaw.com for credit/approval).
    1. And when an SBC Athlete does something epic, every Active SBC Athlete gets something epic: aka a free draft beer or cider at SBC.
  4. Podium spot and/or age group win: free draft beer or cider at SBC for the athlete (on weeks where there is not already a free Active member winner/epic reward).
  5. A significant PR/milestone/achievement that you have been working towards and are really excited about achieving (submit application to neilchanter@stronglaw.com for a ruling): a free draft beer or cider at SBC.
  6. FYI - free draft beer or cider can be substituted for a soda/tea (just don’t tell Neil), unless you are under 21, then you’re good for sure!
  7. Active members also get 10% off of their food at SBC, with presentation of their Active member’s card.  (This is valid all the time, but only for the Active member’s food.  Does not apply to beverages of any kind.)
TO BE CLEAR.  To participate in the rewards program – you must be an “Active” SBC Athletics team member.
Team-wide rewards announcements for the coming week will be made on the General Channel on Slack.  Join here: Slack
Rewards can only be redeemed at SBC between Sunday @ 5pm and Friday before 5pm, the week following the announcement of the reward. (They do not accumulate.  They do expire each week.)  You’ll need to present your SBC Athletics membership card at the time you collect your reward, within the time the award is valid.  Your server/bar-tender will get the back of your card initialed for you.  When you fill up your card, contact Neil for your next one.
Incentive/reward program stays open until all 2019 funds are exhausted.

Weekly update 2/12/2019

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

Hey everyone,

Plenty happening in SBC World this past week even if we're in the midst of winter. Last Tuesday we had a terrific panel discussion at the Ask a Pro/Coach/Doc Anything. We are truly blessed to have a wealth of knowledge available to us. On the competition front, Charlie Hungerford earned a 2nd place in the Grand Masters division at the Mississippi River Half Marathon. From Bryce Collier and the SBC Soccer; they won 14-5 over the Aztecas after a week off due to weather cancellations. The team is now 2-0. Great job guys! They play again 9pm this Wednesday at Lake Country Soccer. They will face off against Arsenal, who is currently in second place in the league. On another note; Even though the Fairbanks Bike Shop is closed for the season, we became aware of a young person in need of a bike as a main mode of transportation. A little coordination between the right people resulted in this young person again being able to get back on two wheels.

The weather was great and I know several of us got out and enjoyed an unseasonably warm February weekend. A handful got out and raced. I'm told that Nicole Fleming  won Overall Female at the Abominable Snowman race in Merrimac WI. Gravel racing underway again in Shawnee, OK with the Gravel Growler. Dathan Atchison and Brian Barr cracking the top ten in their respective categories. Paul Hardin and Russell Ussery represented well too. Great job everyone.
