Big update from the SBC Bike Shop at The Fairbanks;

“It’s been a great season at the bike shop so far, all be it in the bizarre COVID world that we all now live in.

We wanted to be sure folks knew how the community bike shop worked, behind the scenes.  The shop is run by 100% volunteers.  It is stocked with bike shop supplies/tools/masks, etc that are either donated directly or by the shop using the funds generated by our fundraisers (annual moonlight rides, February Trivia Night, etc).

So what happens to the money generated from bike sales?  For example, last Wednesday night we generated almost $500 in sales.  Where does that money go?  100% of it.  And we do mean 100% of it.  Goes to the Fairbanks and the Drew Lewis Foundation’s mission.

For $500, The Fairbanks:
  • is able to create supplemental food boxes for as many as 30 families.
  • can get 25 kids new outfit and back-to-school supplies.
  • can purchase 5 tablets for kids to checkout this fall for those that will have to homeschool (they have been using wifi and our chrome books all summer for same reason - number is increasing of those needing technology and wifi).
  • is able to provide evening childcare for two months, for families completing IT and web development classes.

So every bike you donate.  Every bike you persuade a friend or neighbor to donate.  Every hour you volunteer.  All help towards the goal - bike sales/revenue.  These efforts directly result in: A) Getting a really well priced bike into the hands of someone who really wants/needs it; and B) generates revenue that ends-up directly benefiting the community-centric-mission of the Fairbanks.  100% of it.
