Weekly Update 8/31/2020

Celebrating athletic achievement that better ourselves, our teammates and our community.

The Leadership Committee met last Tuesday to formally pass the mantle on to Stephanie Snow as she takes over as Director. Several things were discussed and ideas passed around. More on those items as they gel. We filled some empty chairs on the committee. Please welcome the following; Dr. Evan Fusco- Non-Member Chair, Denise Temofeew- New Member Chair, Les Schaeffer- Monthly Team Videos. One thing we'd like to get everyone on board with is utilizing Slack to communicate with one another. It's a powerful platform and easy to use if you take a little time to become familiar with it. Here are some useful "Channels" on our Slack page to get you started;

General

Buy Sell Trade

 Fairbanks Bike Shop

Cycling

Running

Triathlon

You have to subscribe to each channel individually to follow that channel's content, and you can create a channel if you wish to. This platform is great if you want to keep up with events that may pop up through the week, coordinate a training group, or to plan a particular event. It's also a great spot to read and write race reports and results. Speaking of results, if you have them, you can send them to your team captains, or to me at longjohnhershel@gmail.com.

Weekly Update 8/24/2020

Celebrating athletic achievement that better ourselves, our teammates and our community.

There were a few things going on this past weekend in the life of SBC Athletics. Charles Givens threw it down at the MO State Crits. Charles gives a nice little race report HERE. Your editor (John Long) raced in the Pro Category at the MORC Rocks and Roots Enduro. Interesting format for this XC rider. After work Century is Friday night. Details below. These are always a good time, even if you don't do the full hundo. Events are being cancelled or moving virtual these days. It looks like most of our fall running events are moving virtual. Here's one to consider- Lost and Found of the Ozarks.

Weekly Update 8/17/2020

Celebrating athletic achievement that better ourselves, our teammates and our community.

New Director and lots happening at The Mothership. Thanks Neil for getting us where we are, and thanks Stephanie for taking us where we're going. See below;

As you might imagine, 2020 has been a trying year for SBC, but the Mothership’s ownership/management team is working tirelessly to figure out ways to make sure SBC survives in the new “normal”.  To that end, we have had to be become ever more focused on the survival of SBC for our community, no matter how long the pandemic lasts and no matter how long term its affects remain.  To that end and despite COVID, there are some really exciting things happening with and around SBC (think: taking over the distillery, putting in a new canning line, the new Blue Canoe American Pale Ale, the new event space: “The Cellar”, the new floor upstairs - to name but a few).

With the SBC ownership/management team laser focused on the ever-more time intensive future of the mothership,  we are also ecstatic to report that the future of SBCA is equally as exciting, as we get ready to enter a new chapter of the SBCA story/journey.  As many of you know, over the years (founded in 2012), SBCA has grown/transitioned from a small group of cyclists committed to the idea of riding 100 miles in less than 4 hours as Team SUB-4, to SBC Cycling and then pretty soon after, into SBC Athletics.   But it is time for SBCA to reach a greater cross-section of the local athletics population - under younger, brighter and much more imaginative leadership.

To that end, Stephanie Snow (as you may know, Jonathan Traughber’s fiancĂ©)  has agreed to take over as Director of Operations for SBCA.  As a mother and long-time supporter of SBCA, and with a background in logistics, Stephanie is perfectly suited to bring a fresh/younger/female/mother’s smorgasbord of new ideas and perspectives to SBCA in an organized, thorough, considered/measured, inclusive and completely non-political way.  But as you can imagine – the opportunity, challenge and transition make Stephanie a little nervous, and while not by any means overwhelmed by the task, she will no doubt need all of our support, as the transition concludes.

If any of  you have ideas on how to further the SBCA mission – please share them with Stephanie (email above in cc line: stephs090386@gmail.com ).  She very much wants to hear from you about any ideas you have to make SBCA better and better for more and more people.

Your current SBCA leadership committee:

  1. Director of Operations: Stephanie Snow
  2. Club Secretary: Heather Cribbs
  3. Bike Shop: Jason Stratton
  4. Social Media: Dylan Pelletier
  5. Team newsletter: John H Long
  6. Monthly team videos: [still need someone here – contact Stephanie if interested].
  7. Team gear/kit: Stephanie Snow
  8. Recruitment/membership: Russell Ussery
  9. Tour De Brew: Brian Barr, Josh Mattix
  10. Cycling: Tony Franklin
  11. Running: Rachel Baker
  12. Triathlon: Josh Mattix
  13. Captain of Co-ed soccer team: Heather Cribbs
  14. Inclusivity Chair:  Brian Barr
  15. Non-SBCA member on the committee for complaints process/and otherwise outside club perspective: Denise Temofeew
  16. Club counsel – Kurt Larson

Thank you all (not just the leadership folks – but all of you) for all you do for SBC and for SBCA.  As Winston Churchill famously once said: “This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end.  This is merely the end of the beginning.”   Stephanie – thank you for stepping up to this enormous task - we are all so excited to help you guide SBCA into this new chapter and to see where you can take this group of amazing athletes/people.

Weekly Update 8/10/2020

Celebrating athletic achievement that better ourselves, our teammates and our community.

It looks like just about the only game in town this past weekend was the Queen City Century and 5k Fun Run. SBCA put on this unofficial event as a fundraiser for the Drury Triathlon Team. You may remember their team's gear area was broken into and the vast majority of their gear and bikes were stolen. At last look, it appears that the event raised $2500 and counting.  You can still donate HERE, be sure to designate "Triathlon". We appreciate everyone's generosity as we do what we can to support athletic endeavors in our community.

Weekly Update 8/3/2020

Celebrating athletic achievement that better ourselves, our teammates and our community.

In the face of the pandemic, some events have managed find a way to mitigate the risk to go ahead. We had athletes at the Tiger Tri and the State Time Trials this weekend. Big results section with lots of winners. Be sure to claim your free pint this week. Incidentally- The Judge and Toby brought home SBCA's 76th and 77th state titles to add to the team's collection. Pretty impressive.
