Weekly Update 6/29/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

Several events are making their way back to the "Upcoming Events" section. Have a look below. For those of you who have completed 10 races in SBC gear, SBC10 T-shirts are in and can be picked up at the SGB offices.

FYI new SBCA member, Dylan Pelletier (and self-professed social media guru) has asked to take over the SBCA and Bike Shop social media responsibilities.   As part of that, he has requested that any pics which are SBCA related on Instagram are tagged with @sbc_athletics and the hashtag #fortheloveofsport is used in the description – that way he can harvest them to be used on the team social media accounts.  You can also send pics to the team FB account via messenger/messages.  And also directly to Dylan on IG @dylan_pedaling_harder .  A huge thanks also goes out to Michelle Rador, who almost single handedly worked the SBCA FB and IG accounts for maybe as long as the last two or more years, tirelessly keeping the team sites ticking over with an athlete post and a mothership post each day.  Thanks Michelle, so much for your hard work.  And please everyone welcome, Dylan to SBCA. #fortheloveofsport.

Weekly Update 6/22/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

If you're on social media, you've probably heard that the Drury Triathlon Team's bike room/shop fell victim to thieves last week. The thieves not only took bikes, but they also got many tools, helmets and the team bike rack. Keep an eye out for Orbea Orca bicycles outfitted with Shimano 105 and sporting the Drury colors of red, black and gray. As a result, the Unofficial Queen City Century will be a fundraiser to aid the team in replacing some of what was stolen from them. This will be a show and go, unsupported ride. Keep your groups at 25 or less. Multiple distances. More details on the Facebook Event page.

Opening night at the Fairbanks was a huge success. The new space is so much better for shoppers and mechanics alike. One thing we learned in this Covid-19 world is that we could use plenty of disposable masks. If you are looking to donate something, masks is something we could definitely use. Donations can be made through the week by dropping them off at Strong-Garner-Bauer offices at 415 East Chestnut. More info here; The SBC Bike Shop at the Fairbanks

Weekly Update 6/15/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

  • The research, drafting and publishing of the SBCA Code of Conduct has taught us a lot about inclusivity.  It is very easy, without thinking, to alienate others in all sorts of different ways.  Some off the cuff remark about a physical trait, or a nickname - just by way of illustrations – made/given without thought - can, in fact, be demeaning/inappropriate in ways that with just a little thought could have been totally prevented.  With all the time we spend together on the road and on the trails, please take time to think before you speak or act, and ask yourself:  "If I was in their shoes, would this make me feel included and welcome, or could it instead make me feel uncomfortable, belittled, objectified, or otherwise diminished in any way?"  Every single day, in all our interactions with each other, let’s be sure to think before we speak, and think before we act.  As we train together to grow as athletes, let’s also train together to grow as people.
  • In furtherance of this issue: we would like to add to the leadership committee an “Inclusivity Chair" focused on fostering equitable opportunities, fair treatment, and mutual respect throughout the club and our broader athletic community (to the extent we have control/input over that).  If you are interested in filling this role – please let club secretary, Heather Cribbs, know at: h_cribbs@icloud.com.  Many thanks.

Here's an excellent charity opportunity honoring one of our outstanding member's 55th birthday. Have a look; 55 Challenge

Weekly Update 6/8/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

An important announcement from your SBCA leadership committee:
Fellow club members, SBCA is committed to an environment in which all our members are treated with respect and dignity, free of any behavior considered harassing, intimidating, demeaning or discriminatory.  We see great examples of exemplary behavior from SBCA members daily.   However, sometimes it is necessary to spell out the behavior that we do not support at any SBCA associated event/activity and in any interactions with each other.  As fellow members of the Club, we must all ensure that SBCA is a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.  Therefore, as a member of SBCA, you agree to abide by the following Code of Conduct:
SBCA Code of Conduct (adopted 6/5/2020):
  • Always show respect to your fellow club members and equally to members of the public at all times, especially during club events and while otherwise out training (and particularly while wearing SBCA gear);
  • Always show respect and appreciation for the volunteers who give their time to help the club and/or help put on event(s) that you are attending;
  • Always show respect to other road users and/or trail users;
  • Never yell, taunt, or threaten physical violence upon another member of the club, a volunteer, an event spectator or any member of the public;
  • Do not trespass on private land.  “If in doubt, stay out”;
  • Gossip/Rumors: Don’t.  Like your mom taught you – “If you don’t have anything nice to say.  Say nothing.”
  • Never use abusive or vulgar language or other inappropriate gestures, or make racial, ethnic or gender-related slurs or other derogatory comments or gestures while out training, at club events, while otherwise in public, or on social media;
  • Never make inappropriate/unwanted/unsolicited sexual or physical advances, whether in person or electronically/online (including but not limited to email, social media, texts, etc) and/or unwanted/unsolicited physical contact with another club member and/or others participating in club events.  SBCA and all of our events/activities must be a safe and neutral place for all athletes, male and female;
  • Always abide by event/race rules and otherwise engage in fair competition, which includes the use of no PED’s, no course-cutting, no motor-doping, or other means of gaining a competitive advantage that is considered not in the spirit of the event/race.
  • If you feel sick, have a fever and/or an otherwise unexplained dry cough and/or live with anyone that does – do not attend any SBCA events/activities;
  • In summary – whether you mean for it to, or not – as an SBCA member, your conduct (good or bad) can easily be related/attributed back to SBCA.  Consistent with our extensive ‘best practices’ research in developing this code, we want the focus of all our members, as we train towards athletic growth together, to also be centered upon creating a culture of safety and respect - where all forms of disrespectful or unsafe behavior are not tolerated and everyone is equally welcome.

Complaints process below for members, athletes and parents/guardians for issues that have arisen since the adoption of the above code on 6/5/2020 (for issues that arose before the code was adopted, please contact Kurt Larson, directly):
We hope you will not have cause to complain about your experience with SBCA but we understand that sometimes unfavorable situations can occur.  If this is the case, please note the procedures below:
Stage 1: (Informal stage).  You should contact the club first and discuss your concerns with the relevant committee member.  Your SBC Athletics leadership committee for 2020 include: Bike Shop: Jason Stratton; Social Media: Michelle Rador; Team Newsletter: John H Long; Recruitment/Membership: Russell Ussery; Tour De Brew: Brian Barr; Cycling: Tony Franklin;  Running: Rachel Baker; and Triathlon: Josh Mattix.  Club Secretary is Heather Cribbs.  Club Director is Neil Chanter.

  • Most issues can be dealt with successfully and promptly at this stage.  But if not – proceed to stage 2, below.
  • Stage 2: To pursue a complaint at this stage you should make arrangements to meet directly with the Club Secretary, Heather Cribbs.  If the Secretary is unable to deal with the complaint straightaway, she should be able to tell you what action will be taken and by when. The secretary will also tell you when and how they will report back to you.  If the complaint is not resolved by the Secretary within this stage, the complaint then moves to stage 3.
  • Stage 3: You should complain formally in writing to the Club Secretary, who will let you know that they have received your complaint within five working days.  The Club Secretary will then arrange for the leadership committee above (plus, the current Director of Operations from SBC and a non-SBCA athlete/panel-member) to come together to conduct an investigation in the manner it sees fit.  Where appropriate, SBCA’s leadership committee will investigate a complaint on behalf of the club.  They will report back to the complainant the committee’s findings.  You will be given the outcome of the investigation, in writing, normally within 14 days of the completion of the investigation.  SBCA reserves the right to ban any member from further participation in club events, depending on the severity of the findings/investigation.  The club can choose to identify a different member of the committee to act as the contact person for complaints where it appears necessary to do so (i.e. to deal with a conflict of interest, etc).  The leadership committee will be the final arbiter of complaints.  An appeal may be made to SBCA, but only on the basis that the club has failed to follow its own procedures, not as against its actual decision.
  • Stage 4:  You may believe that your complaint was not handled fairly, according to the clubs own complaints procedures, outlined above.  In this case you can ask SBCA’s independent counsel, attorney Kurt Larson, to investigate your situation by contacting him via email:KLarson@larsonlaw.com

Weekly Update 6/1/2020

Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.

OK gang, it's starting to feel like summer around here. Stuff is starting to happen again. We even have a race result this week! Stay safe as we get back to our outdoor activities.

A note about the SBC Bike Shop at the Fairbanks;

Bike shop update:  The new space is so much better than the original - we have a staging area for ready to buy bikes and cycling kit/gear for sale.  Another designated area to keep bikes that need work.  And a totally separate area for our Monday night mechanics to work on bikes, and safely keep tools, etc, etc.  There are some old building damp/wetness/basement issues but other than that - the move has been an enormous improvement.  Many thanks to everyone who helped - especially shop leader Jason Stratton who lead the effort.  Monday night mechanics' nights start in June.  Contact Jason Stratton if you are interested in attending - we're mindful of COVID-19 social distancing/numbers/occupancy issues so while we want folks to be engaged we also want to avoid 20 people showing up on the same night only to be sent home.   jason@blackriverimaging.com.  And then by mid-june - June 17, we are opening up a somewhat muted version of the shop to the public.  (One customer/family at a time, wearing masks only in the shop, etc, etc - but we will be open.)  Anyone interested in working Wednesday nights for the open to the public nights - please contact Neil so we can coordinate in similar ways as the Monday mechanics will be doing. neilchanter@stronglaw.com.  Many thanks.  https://www.facebook.com/events/744700862675638/ and https://www.facebook.com/events/562983207864628/

From Toby Dogwiler, organizer of the TT Series;

Starting Tuesday, June 2nd, the “Covid-19 Social Distancing TT Series” will become the "Tuesday Night is TT Night + Virtual TT". Join us at https://www.facebook.com/events/734965713906334/. The new format will include an in-person TT competition on Tuesday evening (alternating the same two courses, and maybe an occasional "guest" course). For those who prefer the "virtual" format, you can participate that way, too.  However, please note that the "virtual TT week" will run from Tuesday through Monday.

As we become the "Tuesday Night TT Series + Virtual TT" we will begin to post handicapped times and absolute time scoring for the series at the end of every week (now that we have the system figured out and built).  The in-person and virtual events will be scored separately (you can do one or both).  The series will continue through the summer and fall and scoring will be cumulative (with an allowance for a certain number of missed weeks).  More info about the scoring and handicapping will be forthcoming.

Please join us Tuesday evening as we kick-off the in-person TT series. We'll meet at the Republic Aquatic Center parking lot. Please be "wheels down" by 5:50 PM.  We will hold a very brief pre-ride meeting and then ride to the starting line.  The race will start at ~6:00 PM. Check out this link for a map and description of the course.  The competitive by friendly series is brought to you by SBC Athletics and is open to everyone of all experiences and abilities.  The series will continue through the summer and early fall with two scoring systems: absolute time and handicapped time.

And, remember, if you can’t make it Tuesday night you can still participate virtually any time from Tuesday through Monday.

Link to the Facebook event page for full event details.
