Celebrating athletic achievements that better ourselves, our teammates, and our community.
- The research, drafting and publishing of the SBCA Code of Conduct has taught us a lot about inclusivity. It is very easy, without thinking, to alienate others in all sorts of different ways. Some off the cuff remark about a physical trait, or a nickname - just by way of illustrations – made/given without thought - can, in fact, be demeaning/inappropriate in ways that with just a little thought could have been totally prevented. With all the time we spend together on the road and on the trails, please take time to think before you speak or act, and ask yourself: "If I was in their shoes, would this make me feel included and welcome, or could it instead make me feel uncomfortable, belittled, objectified, or otherwise diminished in any way?" Every single day, in all our interactions with each other, let’s be sure to think before we speak, and think before we act. As we train together to grow as athletes, let’s also train together to grow as people.
- In furtherance of this issue: we would like to add to the leadership committee an “Inclusivity Chair" focused on fostering equitable opportunities, fair treatment, and mutual respect throughout the club and our broader athletic community (to the extent we have control/input over that). If you are interested in filling this role – please let club secretary, Heather Cribbs, know at: h_cribbs@icloud.com. Many thanks.
